Primeros Auxilios

This week, Shom, Kate, and I had the opportunity to participate in a health promoter training on First Aid (Primeros Auxilios). We had a lot of fun acting out various emergencies and facilitating hands-on learning for the students, who are just now beginning their second year of the three-year-long training program. I thought you all might enjoy some of the photos we took during the training...
Dominga, explaining what to do in case of a dog bite.

Second-year health promoters Clara, Magali, and Veronica, attending to my "dog bite."
...and my "snake bite."

Shom, teaching the class how to immobilize and bandage a "fractured" arm.

Shom, explaining how and when to apply a tourniquet in case of severe hemmorhage (i.e. his "amputated leg").

Shom and his "bloody nose," another example of hemorrhage.

Clara, demonstrating to the class what to do in case of a bloody nose (pinch and lean forward, don't lean back!).

Learning the proper hand positioning for the Heimlich maneuver, with some very giggly "choking victims".

Domitila, preparing to demonstrate the "baby Heimlich" on a doll.

A Weekend in Copán

This past weekend we had the opportunity to travel to the Mayan ruins of Copán, Honduras with a great group of north american friends. Here are some of our photos!
